Adult Literacy & Skills Development

The AHC Adult Literacy and Skills Development (ALSD) Program supports adults in building essential literacy, life, and employability skills to achieve their personal and professional goals. Through accessible learning opportunities and tailored courses, participants gain the tools they need to thrive in daily life and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

At AHC, we view literacy and life skills as the foundation of self-empowerment and lifelong growth. By focusing on reading, writing, communication, and job readiness, the program fosters confidence, self-sufficiency, and new opportunities — empowering adults to take charge of their future and participate more fully in society.

English Classes

AHC’s English Classes help adults strengthen their language skills — from beginner levels to workplace communication. These classes are designed to build confidence, connection, and career readiness through practical, culturally responsive instruction.

  • English for Beginners: Introduces adults to basic English vocabulary and conversational skills for everyday interactions.
  • Basic English for Multicultural Seniors: Tailored for older adults to improve communication, social engagement, and confidence in daily life.
  • Reading & Writing for Beginners: Focuses on foundational literacy skills to support reading comprehension and written communication.
  • English Language Learning (Levels 1–3): Builds vocabulary, listening, speaking, and writing skills progressively, supporting learners as they move from simple to more complex conversations.
  • Level 4 – English for Work: Prepares learners for employment by covering workplace vocabulary, resume and job application writing, and interview language.

Digital Literacy

The Digital Literacy component empowers adults to use technology safely and effectively in daily life, education, and work. Participants gain practical skills to stay connected and access online services with confidence.

  • For Multicultural Seniors: Introduces computers, smartphones, and tablets in a supportive environment.
  • Level 1: Covers online basics such as internet safety, browsing, and using email.
  • Level 2: Builds on foundational skills, introducing file management, online accounts, and digital productivity tools.

Adult Literacy Workshops

AHC’s Adult Literacy Workshops combine practical learning and hands-on activities that build life skills in three key areas. Each series is offered at different times of the year and focuses on everyday knowledge for confident, informed living.

  • Health Literacy (Summer–Fall): Learn to navigate healthcare systems, understand medical information, and explore wellness topics relevant to the community.
  • Financial Literacy (Winter): Build financial confidence through workshops on banking, credit, budgeting, and income tax basics.
  • Legal Literacy (Spring): Understand fundamental legal rights and responsibilities, contracts, and where to access support for legal concerns.
