Entrepreneurship Supports Program

The Entrepreneurship Support Program (ESP) at Action for Healthy Communities (AHC) empowers aspiring and established entrepreneurs to turn ideas into sustainable businesses. Through tailored workshops, one-on-one mentorship, and access to essential resources, the program fosters innovation, resilience, and inclusive economic growth across our communities.

Since 2015, AHC’s ESP has supported over 780 entrepreneurs, helping them start, strengthen, or expand their ventures. The program places a strong focus on newcomer entrepreneurs in the Greater Edmonton area, offering government-funded, no-cost services that remove barriers and build confidence in business development.

Program Focus Areas

  • Business Development Training: Offered twice a year (spring and fall), this 8-week comprehensive training covers key business fundamentals including planning, marketing, market research, and feasibility analysis. Upon completion, participants receive a Certificate in Business Development, equipping them with the tools and confidence to succeed as entrepreneurs.
  • Coaching, Mentorship & Consulting: Participants are paired with experienced business professionals for up to 12 weeks of personalized mentorship. In addition, consulting sessions with accountants, lawyers, and marketing experts help entrepreneurs address specific challenges and strengthen their business foundations.
  • Networking Opportunities: Through B2B networking, pop-up markets, trade shows, and community events, participants gain real-world experience in promoting and selling their products while building lasting professional connections.
  • Field Trips & Competitions: Entrepreneurs engage in field visits to established businesses for hands-on learning and participate in pitch competitions that build confidence and refine presentation skills.
  • Pathfinding Services: AHC connects entrepreneurs with financing, business information, and community resources through our network of partners. This ensures newcomers can access the tools and supports needed to grow their ventures successfully.

Who is eligible to apply for the Entrepreneurship Support Program?

Our program offers comprehensive support including one-on-one mentorship, workshops on business planning, access to financing resources, networking opportunities, and personalized business development guidance.

How long does the program last?

The program typically runs for 6-8 weeks, with structured mentorship, biweekly workshops, and ongoing support tailored to each participant's business needs.

Are there any costs associated with the program?

The program is designed to be accessible. While most services are provided at no cost, some specialized workshops or advanced resources or services provided by AHC partners may have minimal fees.

How do I apply to the program?

Applications can be submitted through our online portal. The process involves filling out an application form, submitting a brief business concept, and participating in an initial screening interview.

Is funding provided as part of the program?

While we don't directly provide funding, we offer guidance on accessing various funding sources, including grants, loans, and investor connections. We also assist in preparing pitch decks and financial projections to support funding applications.

Are there networking opportunities with other entrepreneurs?

Yes, our program offers various networking opportunities through the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Events, Small Business Week, Farmers' Markets, Business Networking International (BNI), Meetup Groups, Online Platforms like LinkedIn, and Business Field Trips. These diverse channels allow entrepreneurs to connect, share ideas, attend workshops, participate in trade shows, and gain insights from successful businesses, creating a comprehensive networking ecosystem for program participants.

Are there any language requirements for participation?

Yes, the program is primarily conducted in English, with a recommended minimum English proficiency level of CLB 4 (Canadian Language Benchmark 4). We strive to accommodate diverse linguistic backgrounds and can provide some resources in other languages commonly spoken in our community. Participants with CLB 4 or higher will be best equipped to fully engage with program materials, workshops, and mentorship opportunities.
