What do I need to start volunteering?

To begin volunteering with AHC, simply fill out and submit the application form. Once submitted, our Volunteer Coordinator will review your application and provide you with further instructions within a week. You'll be guided through the next steps in the process.

Is it required to be a Permanent Resident to volunteer with AHC?

No, it is not required to be a Permanent Resident. AHC welcomes and values volunteers from all backgrounds and immigration statuses. We are committed to inclusion and appreciate the contributions of everyone.

Can I volunteer if I am not excellent in English?

English proficiency is important, but excellence is relative. We recommend that volunteers have at least a CLB 5 to communicate effectively. If your English skills are still developing, consider enrolling in our English classes (link to ALSD) to help build confidence and improve communication.

Are you providing references?

Yes, we provide references for volunteers. After completing 15 hours of volunteering, you are eligible to receive a reference, either as a reference letter or by having your supervisor’s contact information shared with potential referees.

What documents do I need to start volunteering?

To keep the process as simple as possible, we ask for the following documents: a police record check (with a Vulnerable Sector Check if required for the role), a FOIP certificate, your completed online application, and your resume. You will receive detailed instructions via email within a week of submitting your application.

Are you refunding the cost of the police check?

Yes, we offer a 15 CAD refund for the cost of the police check once you have completed 15 hours of volunteering.

How can I apply to do my practicum with Action for Healthy Communities?

To apply for a practicum, please speak with your practicum supervisor at your educational institution. They will need to contact us first and send the necessary paperwork. Once we review it, a practicum interview will be scheduled to determine if we can accommodate your placement.
